Project Experience

U.S. Department of Defense Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) / Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program to demonstrate enhanced mass transfer of TCE DNAPL from the residual to the aqueous phase using bioremediation. Evaluation of innovative diagnostic tools including stable carbon isotope, DNA-based molecular techniques, and discrete vertical profiling.

Technical support and consulting services to EPA on more than 15 CERCLA sites nationwide, providing independent review of remedial action contractor planning documents, characterization reports, and remedy performance reports. Planned, designed, and executed treatability studies and implemented pilot and full-scale remedial technologies.

Corrective measures evaluation at Sandia National Laboratories of three low-level contaminated groundwater sites with contaminants of concern including TCE, PCE, and nitrate. Implementation of the RCRA Corrective Action, including developing site conceptual models, and technology evaluation and selection.

Abandoned hazardous waste disposal site (Distler Brickyard Superfund Site, West Point, KY) where TCE and other VOCs in fine-grained soils posed a threat to the underlying municipal water supply aquifer. Collaborative effort included a private sector contractor and several universities to develop and deploy an innovative technology (hydraulic fracturing) for bioremediation of chlorinated solvent sources in low-permeability fine-grained soils using chitin, an effective slow-release electron donor for bioremediation.

Implementation of a CERCLA cradle-to-grave remedy for a TCE plume at the Idaho National Laboratory extending approximately 2 miles in a fractured rock aquifer between 200 and 400 feet below ground surface.  Integration of a multi-component remedy including innovative bioremediation for the residual source area, pump and treat for the high concentration dissolved phase, and monitored natural attenuation for the low concentration distal portion of the groundwater plume.

Management of the Environmental Department at the NASA White Sands Test Facility (WSTF) under the Facility Operations and Support Contract ($20M). North Wind manages the Environmental Compliance and Restoration Program, which includes full-scale environmental compliance, restoration, pollution prevention, and conservation activities, as well as large-scale remediation efforts to clean up a large groundwater contamination plume and the corresponding source areas.
